Drone batteries at a Chinese airport

The aircraft is rarely what stops a purchase from flying home. The packs are. Checked baggage is closed to lithium batteries, so every drone battery you carry travels in the cabin, and the watt-hour rating printed on the pack decides whether it boards at all.

The rating is judged per pack, not as a total. Read it off the label rather than the product page: if only volts and amp-hours are printed, multiply them, so a pack marked 15.4 V and 5 Ah is 77 Wh. Many consumer packs sit under 100 Wh, but the high-capacity packs sold with newer models can cross the line, and that is the one number worth checking in the shop rather than at the security lane.

• Spare packs go in the cabin bag, never in checked luggage.
• Insulate the terminals — tape over the contacts, or keep each pack in its own pouch or the retail box.
• Leave the packs where you can reach them; screeners ask to read the label when the marking is small or worn.
• A swollen or damaged pack is refused regardless of capacity, and one with no legible rating has nothing to argue with.
