Fast recommendation

For most short trips, the best shopping basket is sealed tea or snacks, small cultural gifts, official-store accessories, and one carefully checked electronics item. Avoid heavy appliances, fresh food, gray-market luxury goods, and anything you cannot legally bring into your destination country.

Easy gifts

  • Tea in sealed retail packs
  • Museum-shop stationery
  • Silk scarves from reputable stores
  • Packaged snacks
  • Pop toys and character goods

Low-friction gifts are sealed, easy to explain, and do not need warranty support after you leave China.

Worth checking in store

  • Xiaomi accessories
  • Headphones
  • Camera accessories
  • Portable printers
  • Smart travel gadgets

These can be good buys if the app, language, voltage, warranty, and airline battery rules work for your route home.

Buy only with extra checks

  • Phones
  • Drones
  • Power banks
  • Medicine or supplements
  • Luxury goods

The purchase may still make sense, but the failure cost is higher: customs, airline, warranty, authenticity, or import-duty issues.

Five rules before you buy

  1. 1If it needs after-sales service, buy only from an official store or large retailer.
  2. 2If it has a battery, check airline carry-on rules before paying.
  3. 3If it is food, prefer sealed commercial packaging and avoid meat, plants, seeds, and fresh goods.
  4. 4If it is expensive, keep the receipt, payment record, box label, and serial number together.
  5. 5If the saving is small, skip anything that creates customs, warranty, or luggage uncertainty.

Check tax refund and luggage rules

Use this before buying expensive gifts, electronics, or multiple items.
